The UIC Passenger Department will host the webinar “Optimising bike and luggage transportation in railway systems” on 4 October 2024. This event is part of the CEMP project (Customer Experience Platform), within which railway experts exchange best practices and analyse methods to measure and improve the customer experience before, during and after their travel by rail.
The CEMP project focuses on enhancing customer satisfaction by addressing multimodal transport challenges, such as bicycle and luggage management in railway systems. By analysing current practices and promoting innovation, CEMP aims to improve the integration of these elements into rail services.
Challenges in managing bikes and luggage
One of the critical issues faced by railway operators is managing the increasing demand for bicycle transport while ensuring that passengers’ luggage is accommodated efficiently. The rising popularity of cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transport has created logistical challenges for train operators. Limited space on trains can cause overcrowding, especially on busy routes, which impacts both customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
This UIC workshop will explore innovative solutions, such as dedicated train carriages for bikes and luggage, and pre-booking systems that allow passengers to reserve space for their items in advance. These strategies aim to optimise train capacity while improving the overall passenger experience.
Sustainability and user benefits
Incorporating bicycles into rail transport aligns with global sustainability goals. Encouraging train/bicycle combinations reduces reliance on private vehicles, thereby lowering carbon emissions. This contributes to greener, more sustainable transport systems. Additionally, improving luggage management systems increases the appeal of trains over other, less sustainable forms of travel, further benefiting the environment.
This UIC event will showcase how optimising bike and luggage transport not only enhances customer convenience, but also supports environmental objectives.
This webinar offers a valuable platform for railway industry professionals, policymakers and customer experience experts to share insights and successful case studies. The CEMP project emphasises collaboration as a key driver for implementing solutions that elevate the customer experience and make railway services more adaptable and sustainable.
