On 5 June 2026, from 11:00 to 12:30 (GMT+2), railway leaders, sustainability experts, and international stakeholders will come together for a global webinar marking World Environment Day.
Organised by UIC, this event will highlight the critical role that railways play in shaping a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
The webinar will focus on climate change adaptation and resilience, aiming to:
- Recognise the significance of World Environment Day and the railway sector’s contribution to sustainability
- Encourage cross-regional knowledge sharing on climate challenges and solutions
- Highlight vulnerabilities in rail systems and explore the action needed to strengthen resilience globally
Programme
- Introduction:
- Mohamed Rabie Khlie, Chair of the UIC Africa Region and CEO of the Moroccan National Railways (ONCF), will share the company’s experience and action on resilience.
- A representative from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) - TBC
- Lucie Anderton, UIC Head of Sustainability, delivering the introductory keynote speech
- A dedicated presentation from ONCF, which will further emphasise the importance of a strong Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) strategy
- International case studies from Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), and the Chilean State Railways (EFE)
The webinar will be held in English and French.
