The UIC Passenger Services Group hosts Innovation Workshops that explore rail industry developments and technological advancements shaping the sector’s future. Each workshop comprises presentations from industry experts, interactive sessions, and co-creation activities, all supported by digital collaboration tools.
The next workshop is titled “Connecting the dots: Enabling fluid multimodal passenger experiences” and will take place on 16 September 2025 from 9:00 to 15:30 at the EY Wavespace in Rome, Italy. This state-of-the-art environment is designed to foster interaction and inspiration through cutting-edge digital tools and purpose-built workshop spaces. The event will be hybrid, allowing participants to attend either in person or online.
When planning a journey, travellers need to consider the cost, convenience, and overall complexity of their door-to-door experience. Often, multiple modes of transport are involved. However, creating an integrated multimodal passenger experience presents significant challenges, and implementing the Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) concept has proven to be particularly complex.
In this workshop, we will explore evolving passenger expectations regarding door-to-door journeys and assess the key challenges that the transport sector faces in meeting these demands. Moreover, we will examine innovative digital solutions that could pave the way for seamless and sustainable cross-border multimodal travel experiences. Finally, we will discuss how rail operators can play a key role in facilitating multimodal mobility by coordinating with the rail industry and forming partnerships with other transport providers.
