The 24th African Regional Assembly takes place online

On 12 June 2025, the 24th African Regional Assembly was held remotely, under the chairmanship of Mohamed Rabie Khlie, CEO of the Moroccan National Railways (ONCF).

Khlie then gave an opening speech, with a message focusing on inter-country and high-speed rail projects on the continent, as well as an innovative strategy in line with the African Union Agenda 2063.

Next, François Davenne, UIC Director General and interim Coordinator of the Africa region, presented the UIC strategy for 2026-2028.

The Africa Region’s ongoing activities include working with the African Union Commission, and making progress within the Safety and Security Taskforce and the Narrow Gauge Taskforce, the latter which which is open to members from Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. Additionally, regular Africa Railway Thursday webinars are being organised for the Africa Railway Community, as well as training sessions lead by ONCF and UIC.

In the course of 2025, the Africa region is also planning to launch the Rolling Stock Taskforce, the Women in Rail in Africa Taskforce, with a kick-off event planned for 16 July 2025, and an Africa Regional Competence Hub which will focus on sharing knowledge, training, and capabilities, in addition to building knowledge transfer opportunities and use cases.
