On 12 June 2026, UIC and the RAILWAY SAFETY REGULATOR (RSR) of South Africa officially signed an administrative agreement at the UIC headquarters in Paris.

This new cooperation framework will strengthen the partnership between UIC and RSR to support the South African rail sector’s modernisation and promote safer, more interoperable and future-ready railway systems.

The agreement will foster cooperation in key areas such as:

  • Railway safety, security, and standards benchmarking
  • Digitalisation, signalling, and emerging technologies
  • Regional harmonisation within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region
  • Participation in UIC working groups and international fora
  • Training initiatives through the UIC Rail Academy

UIC warmly thanks Brian Monakali, the RSR leadership team, and all participants involved in this important milestone for international railway cooperation.

Together, we continue building stronger global partnerships to make progress on sustainable rail mobility worldwide.
