On 17 July 2024, a team from the UIC Freight Department visited the DELTA 3 Logistics and Multimodal Hub, with Eric Guenther, Sales Director at DELTA 3, providing an in-depth presentation on their operations during the visit.

Guenther emphasised the critical role of combined transport in reducing carbon emissions. The talk highlighted the environmental benefits and the necessity of integrating various transport modes to achieve sustainability goals.

The discussion also covered the challenges faced in combined transport, including the lack of capacity and planning difficulties in the railways, as well as the time-consuming nature of handling paper-based documents. These issues are significant hurdles that need to be addressed to improve efficiency and reliability in intermodal transport.

Following the presentation, the UIC Freight team toured the DELTA 3 site. The visit included a look at the inner marshalling yard of 14 electrified lines, and the terminal is also equipped with a level 1 locomotive maintenance workshop. Additionally, the team had the chance to see the gantry crane in operation, showcasing DELTA 3’s advanced infrastructure and commitment to facilitating seamless logistics between rail, road, and the waterways.

A lot of exciting workstreams and new approaches are being submitted, challenged and endorsed by UIC, with the Special Group Combined Transport being heavily involved.
