The 2nd Annual SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking Conference was held on 10 October 2023, with around 400 stakeholders participating. The event kicked off a campaign to update the European ATM Master Plan 2024, focusing on modernising Europe’s air traffic management for improved efficiency and environmental friendliness.
The revised master plan, with a core focus on sustainability, aims to decarbonise the aviation sector with urgency, aligning with Europe’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
Magda Kopczynska, Director-General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission underlined SESAR’s pivotal role in developing solutions to meet these objectives. She noted that SESAR is in a favourable position following the SESAR 2020 programme’s success and the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking being launched.
Raul Medina, Director-General of Eurocontrol, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of SESAR as a hub for transformative ideas in aviation.
During the conference, SESAR, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, and Eurocontrol published a discussion paper to guide the master plan’s updates.
Additionally, the aviation industry expressed its strong support for the campaign, highlighting its commitment to achieving this sustainable vision of the future.
The conference also emphasised the urgency of deploying digital ATM solutions and the need for greater entrepreneurship and risk-taking within the industry.
More than 30 SESAR projects were showcased, covering various critical areas, from connected ATM to cyber security.
Andreas Boschen, Executive Director of the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking, concluded the conference by expressing his gratitude for the contributions to the debate and called for ambition and compromise to advance towards a digitalised and environmentally friendly European airspace.
