The International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is a worldwide initiative to improve awareness around level crossing safety. Since 2009 the campaign has been spearheaded by the International Union of Railways (UIC), the worldwide railway organisation, with the support of the global railway community. Around 50 countries usually take part in the annual ILCAD campaign.
Each year, a partner country hosts the launch event where best practices and projects to improve safety and reduce accidents are shared.
The conference attracts railway industry representatives, road authorities, academics, and many others from around the world who are working to raise awareness about the dangers surrounding level crossings.
The international conference to launch the 15th edition of ILCAD will be held at the Royal Castle of Warsaw on 15 June 2023, and will be preceded by TRESPAD (Trespass Prevention Awareness Day), which will be launched on 14 June 2023 nearby, at the National Institute of Polish Rural Culture and Heritage (Narodowy Instytut Kultury i Dziedzictwa Wsi) (website in Polish only). Finally a technical visit will take place on 16 June 2023.
All of these events are generously being hosted by PKP and the PKP Group Foundation.
The members of the public targeted in the ILCAD campaign 2023 are agricultural and industrial crossing users, while the slogan for 2023 is “Tracks are for Trains!”
The themes of the ILCAD 2023 launch conference are:
- Technology – what technologies could help educate people, raise awareness, and ultimately prevent accidents at level crossings?
- Enforcement/Regulations – joint railway and local authority initiatives e.g. with police forces to encourage people to respect the highway code.
- Community outreach – what are the best means of making people aware of the safety risks at crossings?
Conference to launch TRESPAD (the Trespass Prevention Awareness Day) 2023
Trespassing and suicides affect the whole railway industry as they have a negative impact on safety, performance, reputation, costs, and efficiency. It also affects all businesses as well as society as a whole, and is therefore something that must be tackled together.
The Trespass and Suicide Prevention Conference to launch “TreSPAD”, the new campaign for the UIC International Trespass Prevention Awareness Day, aims to share information on key activities that existing programmes are working on with industry partners.
The conference aims to identify what already exists, what else is needed, what individual organisations can do to help prevent trespassing and suicides and how we can work much closer together on these issues.
