The EU BISON project - Wilding Railways

The Biodiversity and Infrastructure Synergies and Opportunities For European Transport Networks (BISON) project is led by a consortium of 39 European members and associated countries. BISON aims to provide European member states, associated countries, and stakeholders with tools and recommendations for mainstreaming biodiversity into the entire transport infrastructure life cycle (design, construction and operation). UIC is a key member of the EU-funded BISON project by representing railways and showcasing its European members’ best practices in biodiversity management.

The BISON project is delighted to announce that an international event has been organised in collaboration with the UIC Sustainable Land Use (SLU) Sector, and will open the UIC Sustainability Action Week on 27 February 2023. Any interested parties are invited to attend the one-day “BISON Wilding Railways" event at the UIC Headquarters in Paris, which is aimed at scaling up the EU project outcomes for railways. Participants will also be able to attend similar events on other topics of interest within the UIC Sustainability Framework during Action Week.

The main focus of the event is to leverage the collective knowledge of the participants from around the world, to enhance solutions on railway land management strategies and practices. A meeting from different sectors of expertise, institutions, and companies has also been planned to address the proposed topics in each #thinktank discussion. The BISON project work package leaders will be facilitating the participant led discussions on the best ways of promoting the project results and recommendations. Through active knowledge and idea sharing, the aim of the thinktank sessions is to further connect #ecology #biodiversity, and #ecosystem management, with #railway infrastructure management. The event will also feature high-level presentations by key railway representatives, where participants will receive insight on the latest topics which combine the railways and ecology. At the end of the event, the BISON project’s e-learning tool will be presented as a fully open access capacity building platform which is a important element for disseminating and transmitting knowledge.

After the event, key points taken from the discussions will be illustrated by visual designers and summarised in a digital poster, which will be integrated into the final outcomes of the BISON Task 2.4 report, as the BISON project includes many capacity building activities within their work packages, and the workshop will be classified as one of these activities.
