In 2022 UIC is commemorating the 100th anniversary of its founding.

To celebrate this anniversary, an exhibition organised in partnership with SNCF’s Archives and Documentation Service (SARDO) was held from 6 to 8 December 2022 at UIC.

The exhibition retraced in chronological order the history of the organisation through various objects.

François Davenne, UIC Director General, gave an opening speech on 6 December, highlighting its quality: “This exhibition is the result of the joint work of our Documentation Centre Manager, Alexandra Lefebvre, and Géry Nolan from SNCF Group’s Archives and Documentation Department, assisted by the Communication Department team and in particular Coralie Filippini.

Available at our General Assembly, it has retraced the history of our Association, from the first actions at the time of the European railway re-construction after the First World War so that the companies could agree on standards that would allow the inter-circulation of rolling stock beyond their own network and a harmonisation of exchange methods, to the track gauge rules, rail types, tunnel and rolling stock gauges, but also the height and gauge of buffers, types of couplings, Berne key, etc., to the work on new technologies, climate issues, etc..”

The UIC topics presented were:

  • Genesis of UIC
  • Creation of UIC
  • Ticketing and timetables
  • International high-speed services
  • Passenger railway station: accessibility
  • High speed trains and speed records
  • Standardisation of passenger rolling stock
  • Standardisation of freight rolling stock
  • Standardisation of infrastructure
  • Signalling and telecommunications
  • Environment and communication campaigns
  • International corridors
