As part of the second United Global Sustainable Transport Conference, UIC, together with UITP, UN-Habitat and ICLEI, organised the ‘Back to better mobility: accelerating sustainable transport in the next decade of action’ side event held on 15 October.
This side event gave UIC and its partners the opportunity to share the messages to be carried by the mobility sector at the upcoming COP26 and confirm that rail and public transport are ready to be part of the solution.
All speakers agreed on the need to make modal shift desirable and to invest now in public transport. The need for a comprehensive transport policy to encourage modal shift and recovery was also noted. The discussions, moderated by Lucie Anderton, allowed UIC to highlight several points.
Marc Guigon presented the main recommendations from the global study on the ‘new normal’, having previously stressed the consequences of changes in mobility after the pandemic. He recalled that there is only a short window of opportunity for rail to invest by 2030.
Sunzhe Cao (CARS, UIC member) presented an outline of the work of the UIC Sustainability Taskforce and provided information on the preparation of the 2030 Vision.
Marta Subira, President of FGC (UIC member; FGC is chair of TopRail) and Elisabetta Tromellini (FNM Group, UIC member) also participated in the side event.
